The Captive Lending Playbook: Inside Sanjeev Moghe’s Appointment at Bajaj Auto Credit

The appointment of Sanjeev Moghe as Chief Executive Officer of Bajaj Auto Credit Limited (BACL), effective November 2, 2026, signals a structural shift in India’s vehicle financing landscape.

Moghe, who resigned from Axis Bank in October 2026 after eight years leading Cards & Payments and Southern Branch Banking, marks a strategic homecoming to the Bajaj ecosystem, where he previously spearheaded the EMI Cards franchise at Bajaj Finance.

The Strategic Shift: Insourcing Auto Credit

Historically, customer vehicle financing for two-wheelers and three-wheelers manufactured by Bajaj Auto was largely driven by sister retail lending titan Bajaj Finance.

However, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are increasingly insourcing customer financing. By scaling BACL as a 100% captive non-banking financial company (NBFC), Bajaj Auto captures the full interest margin spread, protects proprietary customer lifecycle data, and insulates dealership inventory velocity from external bank credit cycles and RBI risk-weight increases.

Bringing Credit Card Speed to Vehicle Showrooms

In appointing Moghe, BACL has deliberately chosen a payments and retail checkout architect rather than a conventional asset-backed lender. An alumnus of IIT Bombay and IIM Calcutta with over 27 years of experience across Citibank, Bajaj Finance, and Axis Bank, Moghe built some of India's largest co-branded credit card programs.

Applying this payments DNA directly to the showroom floor fundamentally alters the borrower experience: replacing multi-day vehicle loan processing with real-time, algorithm-backed point-of-sale (POS) approvals that convert dealership footfalls into financed buyers within minutes.

The EV and Clean Energy Catalyst

The leadership transition coincides with an unprecedented product diversification cycle at Bajaj Auto. Scaling electric mobility via the Chetak EV portfolio and commercializing the world's first CNG motorcycle (Freedom 125) requires tailored credit products: customized residual-value models, battery-lifecycle financing, and flexible micro-EMI structures.
