SBI's chairman: the bank 'definitely missed the payments bus'

SBI processed over 631 crore UPI transactions in June 2026 — only about 2.3 crore ran through its own apps. YONO Pay is the attempt to close that gap.

State Bank of India has something most fintechs would dream of: hundreds of millions of customers.

Yet its Chairman has acknowledged something important:

SBI “definitely missed the payments bus.”

SBI Chairman C. S. Setty said the bank is now trying to strengthen YONO Pay and get more of its customers to use SBI’s own payment ecosystem.

The challenge?

By the time State Bank of India pushed harder into consumer payments, PhonePe and Google Pay had already built enormous user habits around UPI.

In June 2026, SBI processed more than 631 crore UPI transactions across the ecosystem, but only around 2.3 crore were through its own apps.

That gap tells an interesting story.

SBI had:

Customers. Trust. Infrastructure. Distribution.

But fintechs captured something arguably harder to win:

the customer’s daily digital habit.

And that’s the real lesson here.

Digital banking isn’t just about having an app.

It’s about becoming the first app a customer opens when they need to pay, transfer, invest or manage money.

SBI may have missed the first wave of consumer payments.

But with YONO Pay and its broader YONO 2.0 strategy, the bank is clearly trying to close that gap.

The interesting question now isn’t whether SBI can build a bigger payments platform.

It’s whether India’s largest bank can change a habit that fintechs have already built.

Do you think YONO can realistically challenge the consumer payment dominance of PhonePe and Google Pay?
