On October 13, 2026, 30-year ICICI veteran Anup Bagchi concludes his tenure as MD & CEO of ICICI Prudential Life to take charge as MD & CEO of HDFC Bank on October 27. Just 24 hours after Bagchi’s exit, 26-year ICICI Bank veteran Sidharatha Mishra steps into ICICI Prudential Life’s corner office on October 14 for a five-year term.

1. The Exit: Anup Bagchi’s Investor Trust Test at HDFC Bank

Cleared by the RBI for a three-year term succeeding Sashidhar Jagdishan, Bagchi becomes the first external chief executive in HDFC Bank’s three-decade history. His appointment comes at a critical inflection point:

  • Reversing the De-Rating: With HDFC Bank shares down over 27% in 2026 amid moderating post-merger loan growth, Return on Equity (RoE) compression, and governance overhang, Bagchi’s primary test is winning back institutional investor trust.
  • The 4-Point Turnaround Mandate: Armed with the 'One ICICI' execution playbook forged during his stints as ED at ICICI Bank and CEO of ICICI Securities and ICICI Life, Bagchi is tasked with delivering clearer quarterly benchmarks, rebuilding low-cost CASA deposits, reviving high-yield unsecured retail credit, and accelerating subsidiary cross-sell.

2. The Entry: Sidharatha Mishra’s Digital & Retail Playbook at ICICI Life

To succeed Bagchi, ICICI Prudential Life turned to its deep internal bench, appointing Sidharatha Mishra (who joins as COO on October 6 before assuming the MD & CEO role on October 14, subject to IRDAI approval):

  • From Utkal University to the Corner Office: An alumnus of Utkal University, Bhubaneswar (B.Sc. & PGDM Finance), Mishra joined ICICI Bank as a management trainee in 1998, rising through regional retail leadership across Odisha, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana.
  • Digital & Bancassurance Synergy: Most recently heading Digital Channels & Partnerships, Voice Channels, Customer Service, NRI Banking, and IFIG at ICICI Bank, Mishra is uniquely equipped to deepen parent-bank cross-sell, expand NRI protection flows, and defend Value of New Business (VNB) margins.
