Executive Summary
State Bank of India (SBI), the country’s largest commercial bank, has announced plans to invest approximately $1 billion (over ₹8,300 crore) to build an integrated, bank-wide Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Generative AI framework.
Speaking at the 8th Edition of the ETBFSI CXO Conclave in Mumbai, SBI Chief Information Officer Abhay Pandey detailed the multi-year roadmap, emphasizing a structural shift away from isolated, standalone use cases toward deep core banking integration.
Transitioning Beyond Isolated AI Pilots
The enterprise framework is designed to eliminate fragmented point solutions—such as basic contact-center chatbots—in favor of an interconnected intelligence layer:
- Enterprise Data Unification: Consolidating massive repositories of structured transactional data and unstructured customer interactions across SBI’s 500+ million account holders into a single intelligence fabric.
- Real-Time Risk & Fraud Mitigation: Deploying machine learning models directly at the core transaction layer to enable sub-second fraud interception, automated Anti-Money Laundering (AML) monitoring, and predictive credit underwriting.
- Next-Gen Digital Channels: Upgrading platforms like YONO with contextual product offerings, dynamic credit line adjustments, and voice-assisted banking in multiple Indic languages.
