The Reserve Bank of India has approved the appointment of Mahesh Muralidhar Pai, a Canara Bank veteran, as the new MD & CEO of South Indian Bank, effective October 1. He succeeds P. R. Seshadri.
The appointment comes as South Indian Bank works through a multi-quarter cleanup of corporate NPA defaults that weighed on the bank for years. The lender has pivoted its loan book toward retail credit, gold loans, and MSMEs during this period.
Pai spent decades at Canara Bank managing large-scale retail distribution and regional portfolios, giving him direct experience with ground-level distribution, local geographies, and agricultural and retail credit.
With the balance sheet cleanup largely done, South Indian Bank's next stated priority is scale — expanding mass-market retail credit penetration across South India, an area where Pai's public-sector distribution background is expected to help.
