Joined by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra, the launch reflects a strategic pivot: safeguarding India’s multi-trillion-dollar digital economy through physical decentralization and state-of-the-art technological insulation.
Housing the Vascular System of Indian Banking
As confirmed by the Finance Minister, the Bhubaneswar Data Centre will house the RBI’s core transaction backbones—most notably the Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) and National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) platforms.
Processing tens of trillions of rupees daily across commercial, institutional, and retail channels, these networks represent the vascular system of Indian commerce. Housing these mission-critical systems in a purpose-built, greenfield sovereign facility ensures uninterrupted payment finality supported by modern enterprise compute power.
Strategic Geographic De-Risking
Historically, India’s primary financial exchanges, core banking data servers, and clearinghouses have been heavily concentrated along the western corridor around Mumbai.
