Reliance Q1 FY27 profit falls 22% YoY to ₹20,946 Cr even as revenue jumps 25%

The profit decline reflects a high base from last year's one-time Asian Paints stake sale gain, not weakness in core operations, per the post's analysis.

At first glance, the headline sounds concerning.

Reliance Industries Limited reported Q1 FY27 net profit of ₹20,946 crore, down 22% year-on-year. Revenue for the quarter rose 25% YoY.

The profit decline traces back to the base effect: Q1 FY26 included a one-time exceptional gain from RIL's sale of its stake in Asian Paints, which inflated last year's reported profit. Without that one-off this year, the YoY comparison shows a fall even though underlying operations held up.

Across segments, Jio continued to gain from subscriber growth and improving ARPU. Reliance Retail delivered healthy growth. The Oil-to-Chemicals (O2C) business benefited from stronger refining margins.

The core message: a single quarter's headline profit number doesn't capture the full picture when prior-period comparisons are distorted by one-time gains or losses.
